Why We Are Still Raving About The RABO

Posted by Melanie Takacs on May 5, 2017 1:15:00 PM

A continuation from “Rockin RABO Meter” blog…

A quick recap, back in January Joe and his buddy Daryl were excited to get their hands on the new RABO (Rotary-All-By-One) meter by Elster Honeywell. Their current stock of Elster meters was missing something…based on experience from past sites:

  1. Joe preferred the RVG because the design allowed for quick and easy maintenance.
  2. Daryl favoured the IRM for its compact size and index that allows for either vertical or horizontal installation positions.

This new device has conveniently combined both of their favorite product features into one nifty model. The Rabo boasts easy maintenance and installation, along with a compact design that can be positioned multiple ways.

It’s now been about three months since this device has been on site and they couldn’t be happier with the performance. Due to the nature of operations that take place on their site, reliability is key, the gas meter has performed well during both low pressure and maximum high pressures events. This robust machine has proven that it can withstand extreme conditions needed for the Saskatchewan climate and still maintain extreme accuracy. It has been sensational in every department, both Daryl and Joe have been raving about it to colleagues regularly.

If you are looking for a product that meets all market applications for gas distribution in one model, look no further! Rotary-All-By-One simply has it all.

Basics of Positive Displacement Principle

This principle projects volumetric measurements by displacing finite volumes of gas. Positive displacement happens within a cavity formed between the meter’s internal housing and its rotating impellers. The counter-rotating impellers move as a “figure 8” and turn due to the pressure dropping as downstream gas is consumed. The rotating impellers separate flowing gas into small, infinite volumes counted using a mechanical index.

What Makes This Meter Different for Operators?

Several operational capabilities make this model superior compared to competitors:

  • By design, the Rabo has a smaller profile than most other rotary meters, making it more manageable to use and maneuver.
  • Impressive pressure range ability, allows this model to maintain extreme accuracy from low pressure through to maximum operational pressure (MAOP).
  • Low-pressure drop enabling flexibility in station design.
  • Extremely easy installation and maintenance.
  • Robust design can handle extreme environmental conditions.
  • Significant reduction in device inventory, since this device is capable of vast functions.
  • Environmentally friendly design.
  • Built-in magnet on the index for uncorrected pulses.
  • Ability to rotate the index with no disassembly.

  • Can easily add an instrument drive while in service.
  • Balanced impellers, allow for more controlled use.
  • Bundled with an electronic volume corrector for single-vendor sourcing.
  • Two “O” rings on the body to ensure no gas leakage.
  • Class 7 strong bearings 1/2000”, provides smooth operation.
  • Only 10 hex screws are required to disassemble the entire meter.
  • Operates at a lower speed compared to standard rotary meters. While this may not sound like a benefit, it truly is; it means less wear and tears on impellers and less maintenance in the future.
  • This lower speed also reduces hazardous noise for a safer work environment.
